The gents from Autoblogger compare the classic Porsche 959 to the outgoing Porsche 911 Turbo S. What many of the younger readers may not know is that the 959 was chock full of the technologies common place in current year base 911 Carrera's, back in 1986. It was ridiculously priced for the mid 1980's as well, at ~$225k (about ~$500k in today's "money"), but can still hang with current day supercars due to its lofty specifications: AWD, a twin turbocharger delivered 444hp, zero to 62 in 3.7 seconds and lightweight materials providing a ~3200 lb curb weight. The lessons learned from this Group B technical exercise paved the way for the current 911 (997.2) Turbo S.

Car Pron: The Hidden workshops of Porsche Classic (Drive)
Today kicks off another Porsche week here at ROTL and this video makes us all sorts of happy. When I was in Stuttgart last summer I got a small taste of one of the Porsche workshops. When you exit the inner Porsche museum, the final merchandising area before leaving the building has a large glass wall to the right that you can see right through. What's back there you might ask? All of the non-displayed museum cars that are being serviced and a small team of veteran mechanics working on them.
When exiting to the underground parking garage you get to see even more goodies. Not as many goodies as you'll see in the Drive special below, but plenty of classic Porsche race cars and rare road going models. I haven't had the time to finish editing my entire set from last year, but for the ROTL regulars I've found time to dig up a couple for this very post.

Current Events: 2012 24 Hours of Le Mans Race Finish
Spoiler alert...Congrats to Audi's LMP1 entries running 1(e-tron)-2(e-tron)-3(Ultra)-5(Ultra) (model breakdown here) in the 2012 24 Hours of Le Mans! One of the two Toyota gasoline-hybrid (TS030 Hybrid) LMP1 entries took 4th place, beating out the last of the Audi R18 diesel-powered Ultra's. The other Toyota TS030 entry, driven by British Ex-F1 driver Anthony Davidson, was destroyed in a terrible crash spawned by contact with a GT-class F458 (sound familiar?). Anthony unfortunately broke his back in the high-speed accident. On a related note, for all those who watched the recent specials posted on WTWTW involving racing safety tragedies of yester-year, you know that if this was 196X the outcome would've been much worse. The tire safety barrier was a brilliant idea.
In other news, Nissan's Deltawing entry, that wasn't officially racing against anyone, unfortunately ran into both technical difficulties (gear changer problem early in the race) and an accident, hitting a wall after being clipped by one of the Toyota LMP1 cars that was too busy trying to chase down the Audi pack to pay attention. It was a great race overall, albeit somewhat anti-climactic, since Peugeot pulled out of this race after their disappointing outing last year. Toyota will be a better challenge to Audi after the lessons learned this year, but it has to hurt knowing they were out-classed even with major accidents late in the race to both the #2 and #3 R18 entries.
