Welcome to the 2014 motorsport season guys and gals. Starting this Saturday afternoon the 52nd running of the 24 Hours of Daytona will begin. Fox and its affiliates Fox Sports 1 & 2, along with IMSA.com, will be covering the entire event, but there will be layovers between televised race action. As we discussed at the end of last year, Grand-Am and ALMS are out and the IMSA/TUDOR United Sports Car Championship is in; this will be the first race in which these two competing race series merge for the positive longevity of road racing in the US. This should bring a lot more to the race action than we're used to seeing in the US, going forward, and hopefully this first event won't take away from this very special WEC event that we've been following religiously over the past several years. This weekend is relatively low on quantity, but high on quality. Velocity is bringing some more European motorsports to our eyes this fall starting with FIA European Rally Championship action. We have new DTM action, the Grand-Am Championship at Lime Rock Park and new regulars. ROTL should be running around OC this weekend for H2oi, even though we'll probably skip the show on Sunday again, so hopefully we'll see some of you around the usual gtgs and hangout spots. Another solid weekend of action I ahead, including Rolex at Laguna Seca, more great specials, Mecum Auto Auctions and of course the return of F1. Where we last left off...

Practice went by without much of a hitch, sunny and all. Then came the mixed conditions so familiar to Spa. Qualifying became a wet and dry affair in Q1, dryish in Q2, then the rain rolled in strong for the very beginning of Q3 after everyone queued and got driving on the initial tire warm-up lap. Paul Di Resta talked his pit into a quick pit stop; they threw him on intermediates to jump the field as they hit the garages, aiming to get a great lap in before the rain picked up in strength. This strategy appeared to be pure genius, until it dried out just minutes later at the very end of Q3. Four consecutive purple laps later, Hams took pole (again) with Vettel sharing the first row with him. This means we'll have another Mercedes on pole in 2013. Di Resta pulled off 5th spot for his efforts which still was a great spot for Force India.

On a side note word is Ferrari has given Massa this race and the next in Imola to prove his worthiness to the team. He qualified 10th just behind his teammate Alonzo, so time will tell how this shakes out. Massa still believes he has a lot in the tank regardless of where he ends up next year; he would prefer to stay put of course.

The race started of with Hamilton getting a great start, but within a handful of corners Vettel sweeps past him and pulls away like nothing. By lap 3/44 he's 2.5 seconds up. It appears the lesser use of rear wing on the Redbull is working wonders on this very top end centric track. Meanwhile, Alonzo is tearing through the field from 9th and is trying to take 5th from Button. Massa has gone backwards to 12th spot.

By lap 8 Alonzo has reached 3rd while Hams was still trying to keep within reach of Vettel. Raikkonnen's brakes are belching large clouds of black soot under load like nobody's business. It's now becoming clear who is setup for high speed and those setup for better handling and tire management (especially in the case of rain). Vettel made his softs last 15 laps, much longer than anyone else.

Alonzo passes Hams for third and doesn't give it back. Looks like the Petronas cars aren't as quick on this track as they'd like to be. Webber switches on the harder tires to see if he can't reduce his stops. Button is looking to pull a one stop, still out around lap 20. Grosjean is still out on his softs, dropping off the pace of the field a bit. Raikkonnen's front brakes give up on him while chasing Alonzo down in lap 26, the team retires his car. His consecutive streak is now broken. Also this has major implications for the championship chase, just taking the second spot not long ago.

Hams and Massa both pit their last set of tires on 27/44, hards, to finish the race. Meanwhile in mid-pack, there's a four man battle going down. On the last chicane before pit entrance Maldonado gets into the side of Di Resta and Di Resta took the worst of it; destroyed rear suspension and retired from the race. Maldonado, who t-boned Di Resta while trying to make a last second trip to the pit, actually limped it into the pit to get his front end fixed. After the stewards reviewed this incident, Maldonado was surprisingly given a 10sec stop and go penalty even through his race was already ruined. Webber comes in for softs on 30/44 and Vettel is in for his hards on the following lap.

It doesn't look like rain is coming, but there's plenty of time left for a surprise. At this point the order is Vettel, Alonzo, Button. Hams is currently in 4th and reeling Button in due to aging tires. The radar shows a couple of small clouds in the area, but none are very close...but the RedBull pit is telling Vettel to go hard to build a gap as there could be rain late. A pit stop at the end of the race could rewrite the finish on this one.

Button and his pit change from the one stop strategy, goes in for hards on 35/44 and returns to the track in 6th. Grosjean is still on a one stop strategy in 7th spot. Rosberg takes assumes 4th. Massa is slowly making this a decent race, working his way up to 7th, passing Grosjean and his old tires on lap 40/44. Vettel goes purple only to have his pit give him subtle hints to slow down a couple laps later. He has this in the bag and they don't want any surprises; in the end there were none. Alonzo has gone from 9th to 2nd, finishing the race with a sharp drift as a nod to his team and fans, effectively leap frogging Raikkonnen for 2nd spot in the Driver's Championship points. Vettel takes his first win in a few races, Hams comes in 3rd (sound familiar?), followed by Rosberg, Button and Massa.

This weekend in Italy should be a good measurement of where Massa will end up, whether Kimi can recover from this DNF and if Alonzo can continue to chase Vettel down. Additionally, can Petronas give Hams a car he needs to win in Monza, like he did last year driving for McLaren? Can Perez get McLaren on the podium for the first time this season, repeating his finish in 2012? Can Webber snag a win before he retires from F1? While the Driver's Championship seems sown up, there's still room to some movement if some bad luck spreads its way around the field. One thing is for sure, the second seat at RedBull Renault has officially been given to RedBull Torro Rosso driver Daniel Ricciardo. I'm sure Vettel is fine with the teams' decision. Say hello to a stacked weekend folks. We got V8 supercars, WRC (on some channel I don't even know if I get), Grand-Am endurance racing at Watkins Glen and F1 at Silverstone Circuit. Where we left off in F1 was Vettel showing his skill in the RB9 to try sticking it to Lewis and Alonzo in Canada; but they all ended up on the podium together. He pushed closer to qualifying laps than the field in order to maximize field separation rather than holding back for the sake of the tires. Pirelli brought a new compound out that wouldn't separate as badly when pushed to the limit, but it didn't seem to make much of a difference in the outcome. There weren't any tires falling apart in super slow-mo, but there were some other items of note. Massa crashed the car in qualifying again, but came from the back of the field to finish 8th. Vettel took pole and the win. Lewis did a great job snagging third given Webber was on the hunt. Lotus Renault had some bad luck with setup and didn't really compete that well. Jean-Eric Vergne took his Torro-Rosso Red Bull to 6th, surprising many behind him. Force India had another solid outing. Lastly, we're still waiting for McLaren to show us something other than the fact that Sergio wants to win more than Jenson. Current driver standings are Vettel, Alonso, Raikkonen, Hamilton and Webber respectively. Given we're nearing the halfway point of the season it'll be interesting to see who figures out what's needed to keep Vettel from scoring bundles of championship points on Sunday.

What can you say after Shanghai? Ferrari is dialed in. Seriously. Red Bull is trying to pick up the pieces of where they were at the start of the season; Vettel's pace in qualifying lead to a gamble to save tires for the race; the strategy worked well but not great, if you looked at it on paper, but good lord was it exciting to see Vettel track Hams down from about 12 seconds back with four laps to go. He ran through a set of softs in qualifying-esque fashion, falling just short of Hammy (on old primes) across the finish line. Webber fell to bad luck once again, with his right rear tire separating itself from his car 2/3's of the race in. Raikkonen showed he's as spry as ever and put together a very good race despite contact with a doggy paddling Sergio Perez, mid-race. Button put a very good race together, which is a positive for McLaren who apparently has considered bringing back the 12' chassis if there isn't further improvement with the 13' car. Hams snagged pole, but due to the ability of the Petronas Mercedes chassis to protect it's tires, Hams was out of the top spot as fast as he got it. He did hang on to the third podium spot against an absolutely blistering run by Seb at the end of the race. Alonzo grabbed the checkered flag, Raikkonen grabbed second, Hams third and we have a heck of a race ahead of us this weekend. The Grand Prix of Bahrain will provide us chapter four of this years' F1 chronicles.

In other news, this weekend is stacked like Pam Grier. ALMS and IndyCar coming to you from the streets of Long Beach. V8 Supercars from New Zealand. Grand-Am racing from Road Atlanta. F1 is the crown jewel, and there's plenty of our favorite shows. Enjoy your weekends.

For everyone not going to Ocean City, MD this weekend for H2oi, this is what you have to look forward to: Velocity channel has finally brought back current action from the Isle of Man, the nuttiest racing on wheels, with a four hour marathon of individual events...tonight! On Friday night there is a cool special on the Monterey Motorsports Reunion spotlighting the Cobra. A hard to find show called Shifting Gears will be showcasing Audi Motorsport early Saturday, with Rolex Grand-Am action live on Saturday afternoon. Oh and in case you didn't notice, the Star Mazda race that took place at this years Baltimore Grand Prix will be airing this weekend (look for our coverage in early Oct). Top Gear UK is airing season ten in it's entirety on BBCA and Top Gear US is taking a week off for a Playboy special on History Channel. Wheeler Dealers is back with new episodes and Fifth Gear (UK) has finally arrived on our shores, albeit erratically and delayed as expected; the first episode Velocity will air is ep.2, and ep.1 will come the following Saturday (wtf?). There's ALMS action from VIR this weekend and both live qualifying (Friday @ 3:25pm) and race (Sat @ 2:15pm) are on ESPN3.com. The Viper GTS-R boys got smacked around in Baltimore so I'm sure they'll be out for a better showing on this dedicated road-course. There's a lot to talk about before the next F1 race, but I'll save that recap for then. In the meantime there is a nice mix of cool motorhead shows you should tune in for this weekend, not just solid replays. 'One Way' is a story of the Leadfoot Festival in New Zealand, which much like a more grassroots version of the Goodwood Festival covers all manner of motorsport and sporting vehicles; including motorcycles, supercars and vintage racers. There's a new episode (Season 9) of Wheeler Dealers next Wednesday, new Top Gear America (which took a week off in honor of 9/11) and a very cool historic Monaco special with Alain de Cadenet on Saturday night at 10pm. Back to back weeks of F1 is a sweet side effect of having four weeks off. To recap after last week's race at Spa...WTF Grosjean! This domino effect has had great repercussions for the Drivers Championship. Instead of Hams and Alonzo gathering points, they sat at zero for the weekend while Vettel worked his way up from an odd failure to make Q3 into second position. Red Bull Racing's consistency is putting a strangle-hold on the Manufacturers Championship, and letting Vettel work his way back into a strong position. And let's not forget that first time front row qualifier, Kobayashi and his teammate Perez, were both damaged/wiped from the race in the same incident. The current standings leave Vettel knocking on the door in second place, while an ever consistent Raikkonen has creeped into fourth. And out of everyone I think the biggest loser from the turn 1 pile up is Mark Webber. He was comfortably in second place, but Vettel's points for last weekend swapped their positions. I know deep inside Webber still knows how he was hindered from chasing the championship during Vettel's first championship season. But I digress...

This time of year is great, because you get back to back F1 races and plenty of automotive action when flipping the channels. The German Grand Prix last weekend, while not answering many questions, did clear up a couple things. First off, Alonzo isn't as fortunate as he is consistent, the first driver to three wins this season with only ten races left. He drove one hell of a wet Q3 lap and that put him in the position needed to make victory a more direct path. Second, McLaren's consistency on podium is as ragged as ever. Button finally got to sip champagne after multiple ducks and now Hams has Schumi's luck. Third, the field is as close as ever. Force India finished with both drivers in the points for the first time in 3 years. Lastly, Lotus Renault is one or two races away from sitting next to McLaren in the 'clubhouse'. They've been steady accumulating points all these weeks and now are poised for big things; they just need a little something to put them over the top. In related news Red Bull Racing is still competing strongly as always and after some scrutinizing by the stewards, this past weekend concerning their re-engineered exhaust gas flow/downforce solution, they escaped penalty for the time being but will have additional eyes on them going forward. With so little room for advantage between teams, the real skill is where strides can be taken within the existing guidelines.

There's also Grand-Am Rolex racing tomorrow afternoon. For the first time in Grand-Am history, they have a race held at the legendary Brickyard, aka Indianapolis Motor Speedway. This racetrack is well known for NASCAR and IndyCar battles, harboring motorsport in the US for over 100 years. For those of you worried it'll be an oval track race, never fear! This will be a adapted road-course incorporating the main outer oval. This three hour endurance race will start Friday at 4pm. Enjoy your weekends.
