Monaco was quite the weekend. Merc finally failed to get a 1-2 finish, but they still got a 1-3 finish. Ferrari got on the podium, but only because Red Bull released Max into Bottas and there was contact; this lead to a 5 second penalty, which put Max in 4th even though he hounded Hams until the very end -- Hamilton taking a set of mediums into uncharted territory, 60+ laps on a tire only supposed to do 50. However Monaco is a track position dominant track, so once you get your stop in you can typically run to the end if you have the separation needed at right sections of the circuit, which Merc had in spades; Hams rears were perfect even though his left front was graining so he could hook up out of corners without issue. Verstappen was in a pickle once he realized there would be a time penalty for the unsafe release, so he could either run to the end to get as far ahead of 3rd and 4th place as possible to maintain a podium finish, which would require he get past Hamilton, or pit, take the penalty then and try to overtake his way back onto the podium, which didn't look likely unless there was another safety car. No additional safety car came, it didn't rain, so he tried to take on Hamilton for his position. Hams drove a strong race through some old tires and defended like the grizzled vet that his is. Vettel got a surprisingly good finish despite not qualifying to well, on behalf of Ferrari, but Ferrari is still trying to figure out why they can't turn tires on. Honda missed out on making the podium in Monaco, but has been superior to Renault in every way in 2019. Bottas looked strong again this weekend, but was unable to take pole despite a great lap; Hamilton pushed his Merc to the limit and just managed to edge him out in his final lap while Bottas couldn't warm his tires up well enough for the end of Q3. Ferrari's strategy is still suspicious, Leclerc fell victim to that in Q1 -- he should've been told to go back out since the track was getting faster while he sat in the pit (after a salvaged weigh-bridge snaffu, Leclerc missing his call in and his pit pushing him back to avoid penalty). Gasley had another strong race, finishing 5th behind Max and taking the fastest lap point late in the race on softs. McLaren did well enough to get Sainz into 6th, but Norris missed the points in 11th. Torro Rosso finished 7-8, getting all four Honda powertrains well into the top ten. Ricciardo had a scrappy race and got a point for Renault in 9th, but they still have plenty to sort out. Alfa Romeo was MIA and Williams didn't finish in the last two places (15th (Russell) and 18th (Kubica)). The Driver's Championship standings are as follows: Hamilton, Bottas (-17), Vettel (-55), Verstappen (-59), Leclerc (-80), Gasely (-105).  Canada should be a chance for all the teams to reassert themselves; unfortunately Merc is getting an engine upgrade. Red Bull is slowly putting themselves into position to overtake Ferrari; let's see how that effort shakes out.

Enjoy your weekends.

We're in Canada this weekend for the next round of F1 action for 2018, but Monaco was pretty interesting weekend for several reasons. RedBull Racing came into the weekend as the favorites, being the best with aero on slow corners and Monaco being the least dependent on power, of all the calendar's circuits. Ricciardo was confident and rightly so. Meanwhile, Verstappen was also quite fast, but ended up repeating the exact same accident that he had in 2016 (breaking his front suspension on turn 15 by cutting it too closely and going straight into the barrier on turn 16) at the worst of all times, late in FP3. Hamilton was quick, but not quick enough, however he was able to start in 3rd position for the GP. Ferrari was still fast and with Verstappen in the back of the field for the start of the race and out of qualy, Vettel took the runner up spot to Ricciardo's blistering record-smashing qualifying lap (1:10.810). The actual race was more of the same; the top six spots of qualifying matched the race finishing order (all the way down to Ocon in 6th), as track position is king on this circuit. Unfortunately, Alonso's Memorial Day weekend woes continued with his inability to finish another race in succession on this weekend. Last year it was the Indy500 while leading late, this year another mechanical failure on his F1 car (gearbox this time around). The silver lining of this is that this is amazingly the first DNF of the season which is head and shoulders above of last season's results. Also he got an endurance race win at the 6hrs of Spa earlier in May, which has to be some consolation. Ocon raced well, finished 6th and also played nice in the Mercedes manufacturer game by not impeding the races of Hams and Bottas during pit cycles, as this was the first race to feature the pink-walled hypersoft tires. Red Bull Racing put all their chips on this stickiest of the icky tire choice, and only had a set of ultrasofts to meet regulation during the race. Mercedes played with the ultras to see if they could be just as fast with them in Q2, but unfortunately they took too long to get up to temp so the hypersofts were also their optimum tire of the weekend. Verstappen did his best to make up for his late error to his team, by passing early and often, maxing out (no pun intended) in P9 during the race, but was able to get a few points to add onto Daniels 25. With the checkered flag dropped, Ricciardo celebrated with a shoey, Vettel sprayed the royals with champagne and the drivers standings are now as follows: Hamilton, Vettel (-14), Ricciardo (-38),  Bottas (-42), Raikkonen (-50), Verstappen (-75). Canada is a power track, so Ferrari and Merc are looking to get back on track, no pun intended. Look out for the wall of champions!

Enjoy your motorsport weekends.

F1 action returns to Gilles Villeneuve circuit in Montreal, but lets catch up on what happened in Monaco just a couple weeks ago. Merc-AMG had problems getting the tires to work, once again, and Hams got bit the worse out of the duo of him and Bottas. Hamilton was in the knockout zone for most of Q2 and on his final lap got stuck behind a yellow flag, as these larger 2017 cars were touching the armco a bit more regularly and the car ahead lost a FR wheel, removing his last chance to get out of the cutoff zone. Ferrari had no problems getting their tires to work and Raikkonen took his first pole in ages, edging out Vettel. Bottas couldn't catch the Ferrari's and qualified 3rd. Jenson did decent during qualy as the streets of Monaco equalizes powerful cars and less powerful cars, but due to the mechanical woes that Fernando took a break from in favor of the Indy 500, Jenson ended up starting from pit lane on Sunday. Kimi got a great start Sunday, keeping Vettel behind until strategy kicked in; the race started off with everyone holding position, which slowed everyone down given how hard it is to pass. The tires available were soft, supersoft and ultrasoft, but only the ultrasofts had enough grip to make the cars' work and only one stop was needed to complete the GP, so the game was how long you'd run on the ultrasofts before switching to the tire you don't like and if you'd beable to use a caution to switch back onto ultrasofts again in a two-stopper. Ferrari pitted Kimi from the lead first, Vettel got space on track and started running qualy laps, pitted, then jumped Kimi by a few car lengths on his return to track. Seb never gave that position back up which left Kimi quite salty (rightfully so, a win was within his grasp) with the team for his provided strategy backfiring on him. Hamilton jumped a few folks on his race start, but the rest he jumped through a well timed first stop after a caution, which helped him finish in 7th for some very minor damage management given Seb got a full 25 points. Ferrari taking a 1-2 in this race helped them jump Merc-AMG in the Constructors' Championship. Ricciardo, who lost this race last year on an absolutely questionable pit-stop, took his strong pace from the weekend to the final podium spot, out edging Bottas who took 4th. Button was pretty fed up with multiple drivers over the course of the afternoon took a pretty optimistic chance at jumping Wehrlein before the tunnel, late in the race; their tires touched and Pascal ended up T-bar first in the barrier, double DNF. The Haas boys both made the points, Verstappen finally finished a Monaco GP, taking 5th, and Carlos Sainz continued his strong racing this year with a 6th place finish. The current Driver's standings are as follows: Vettel, Hamilton (-25), Bottas (-54), Raikonnen (-62), Ricciardo (-77), Verstappen (-84). It should be another exciting weekend in Canada -- the wall of champions beckons!

Enjoy your weekends.

When we last left off, the Monaco Grand Prix blessed our television sets, with some surprises all around. Ricciardo's Red Bull took pole, but finished 2nd in the race due to a pit-stop that the whole team would like to forget. Verstappen, while a proven talent, still hasn't tamed this famed street track and crashed in just about every phase of the weekend, most notably the race. Alonso's McLaren finished 5th. Hams finally took a win. Sergio Perez took 3rd and was probably the happiest man on the podium, and with Hams there for the first time since clenching the 2015 Drivers Championship, that was hard to do. The purple banded ultrasoft tire was available all weekend, but the race started off wet after great weather leading up. Rosberg had brake issues and really the first spot of unreliability so far this season, much to the delight of the other teams and drivers. And as expected, Monaco's ARMCO barriers remain undefeated. With the smoke clear the Driver's Championship standings are as follows: Rosberg, Hamilton (-24), Ricciardo (-40), Raikkonen (-45), Vettel (-46), Verstappen (-68).

Enjoy your weekends.

This weekend is jam packed; F1 action in Canada on NBCSN/NBC and Isle of Man coverage starting every night, for seven days, starting this Saturday night on Velocity. Don't forget folks, next week is the legendary Le Mans.

Nico Rosberg is coming off two victories, the last being in Monte Carlo; his third straight win on his home turf. Hams was inexplicably sabotaged by his team, making a very questionable pit stop during the aftermath of Verstappen's failed pursuit of passing Grosjean for another position. Bang crash, virtual safety car, then real safety car, then why do you need new tires with ~18 laps left on softs when the first set of supersofts lasted ~30 laps on a full tank? Ah well. Hams took the high road and didn't bash his team, which would've been bad since he just signed a monster contract. Meanwhile Vettel keeps racking up podiums and has found a way to split the two Mercs for the second time this season (Kimi doing it himself in Bahrain). This weekend the F1 folks are in Canada, so it should be a good one. Enjoy your weekends.

We have a solid weekend ahead with more Isle of Man TT action, new Top Gear America, the regulars and F1 returns to Canada. I've been burning it at both ends so I won't get to much into it the recap this time around, but the controversy around Monaco was Nico winning for a second year straight all seemingly due to an off during Q3 which kept Hams from having a go at besting Nico's time. While pole definitely improves your chances of winning Monaco tremendously, Hams was definitely slower than Nico over the entire race and had to fend off young Ricciardo through the checkered flag. Nico squeaks back into the Driver's Championship lead and Montreal will surely continue the inter-team battle of Mercedes AMG domination. The current standings are as follows: Rosberg, Hamilton (-4), Alonso (-61), Ricciardo (-68), Hulkenburg (-75). If you're paying attention you've noticed that despite his strong drives as of late, Vettel is no longer in the top five. Enjoy your weekends.

A good selection of motorsport this weekend with the crown jewel being the ALMS Montery race. This is a 6 hour Petit Le Mans contest going down at Laguna Seca Raceway. Unlike the BGP two weeks ago, even more of the bigger ALMS teams/cars will be in attendance, including the continuously developing factory Porsche GT3R Hybird. It'll run late and there will be a possibly abridged replay on ESPN2 the following day starting at 1pm. Grand-Am racing is back at Mid-Ohio and lastly IndyCar goes to Motegi for the Japan 300; this race will be broadcast live on Versus and will be a nightcap affair due to the timezone difference. Set your DVRs and enjoy the weekend.
