The last two F1 races were pretty significant in terms of 2017 Drivers and Manufacturers Championships and not necessarily in a good way. Ferrari has imploded in some way or another, Vettel suffering another DNF in Japan and a PU failure in Malaysia qualy, the week prior, requiring him to come from the back of the field to take 4th. Raikkonen's car hasn't been much better off, then there are the incidents that have occurred with other cars. Fiat boss has been pressing his thumb on Arrivabene's (and the F1 teams') neck and I don't think it has helped things. Meanwhile a young GP2 and super formula wiz named Gasley has been driving the Torro Rosso in Kvyat's stead, Sainz is leaving for Palmer's seat at Renault, McLaren is going faster with the Honda engine, but not fast enough and they'll be taking on a Renault power next season. Vandoorne has been out performing Alonso in these last couple races, which has helped his confidence, and McLaren is trying to resign Alonso for 2018, but he hasn't committed yet. The Force India guys continue to do well and skirmish since they always seem to end up on the same part of the track at the same time, but they haven't hit each other lately, which has gotten them pretty far up the Constructor's standing. In these last couple races it looks like Max Verstappen's bad luck has waned for the time being; he won the Malaysian GP on his 20th bday and was nipping at Hamiltons hells as he took the Japanese GP, complaining about PU vibrations (keep an eye on that). Bottas looked stronger in Suzuka, Mercedes look better over all in terms of pace, but Red Bull is legitimately quick these days. Max and Daniel have both made the podium with Hamilton for two races in a row and they're about to take 2nd spot in the manufacturers Championship. Hamilton has the luck of F1 smiling on him so far, in this second half of the season, and he's making his opportunities count. He's quietly won his 71st pole position in Suzuka after not being at the top of the times at the start of the weekend. Massa is still doing solid work, but Williams is looking at younger drivers instead of asking him to come back in 2018, which has perturbed Massa, but can you blame Williams? Back to my first topic, however, Ferrari has had one snafu after another and now Hamilton has the ability to win the championship this weekend in Austin Texas (only 4 races left).

The current Driver's Championship standings are as follows: Hamilton, Vettel (-59), Bottas (-72), Ricciardo (-114), Raikkonen (-158), Verstappen (-195). We're in Austin Texas this weekend and the coverage is immense as usual; all free practices can be watches along with additional coverage before and after most of the weekend's race activities. If Vettel finishes 6th or lower and Hams wins, it's game over. Hopefully Maranello can push and take this to Brazil or Abu Dhabi; and hopefully their leadership doesn't do something rash like clear house before the season is over.

Enjoy your weekends.

We're back in Singapore after quite the exciting pair of back to back races at Spa and Monza. Just in case you missed it, Hams has officially put his stamp on the 2017 season. He's taken pole and the race win in both events, matching and taking the pole position record from Michael Schumacher in both races, respectively. Historically speaking this is quite the accomplishment and even more so when you think about how young Hamilton is and how many more races he'll likely go on to participate in. Looking back at Monza, there was plenty of significant action that took place. Qualy was an usually wet affair and after Grosjean went bouncing off the walls after hydroplaning off track on the main straight, there was about 2.5hrs of FIA enforced delays until they got underway. I didn't see actual Q3 replays until the Pre-Race on Sunday, which was annoying as a viewer, but with the session ended, Hams had taken pole followed up Lance Stroll and Esteban Ocon (along with the other usual suspects). Plenty of young talant at the front of the field and in the end they did pretty well on race day. Ferrari had a hard time making the wet tires work inn qualy so they were in the back half of the top ten to start the race. With action underway on Sunday Verstappen's bad luck continued; he got a puncture early in the race after getting side-checked by an aggressive Williams piloted by Massa, which relegated him to the back of the field after pitting, forcing him to work his way back up through the field. Ocon and Perez ended up close to each other late in the race, but they were separated by other drivers limiting their opportunities to see how well behaved they'd be given the previous weeks antics; hard to say if they both learned from past mistakes. Stroll started off strong, but ended up 7th with Massa following in 8th, which was pretty much where things would've shaken out if qualy was dry; a very good showing though given the strength of the front pack on this power track. Bottas started in 4th and made up ground quickly, taking 2nd position early, rolling right into Mercedes' Plan A strategy for a 1-2 finish. Raikkonen burned through his rear tires early, forcing him into some of the first pit stops. Meanwhile, Ricciardo starting from 13th made magic happen by overtaking like mad, getting himself up into 3rd by mid-race. Once the tire swaps began he dropped down the field a bit, but got on super-softs to finish the last 15 odd laps targeting purple sector times, getting him about 4 seconds short of catching a semi-wounded Vettel at the checkered flag for the final podium spot. Alonso and Vandoorne both had to retire, keeping the tension between McLaren and Honda going; the current word is that Honda may switch places with Renault to power McLaren in 2018, but who knows whether or not Alonso will be there to see the change. Vettel and Riakkonen are both contract locked with Ferrari in 2018 so the amount of availabe seats out there for drivers are limited; Massa should retire a second time so there's talk of Alonso going there; time will tell if that happens or if he'll leave for IndyCar. I'll tell you one thing, if Alonso goes to IndyCar I'll watch more than I do now. With the checkered flag dropped the Driver's Championship standings are as follows; Hamilton, Vettel (-3), Bottas (-41), Ricciardo (-94), Raikkonen (-100), Verstappen (-170). Verstappen is now only ten points ahead of Sergio Perez, who is only 3 points ahead of Esteban Ocon, so the mid-top ten is getting tight. Singapore will be track which will suit the strong aero cars like Red Bull so it'll be interesting to see what folks can do to displace Mercedes and Ferrari in Round 13.

Enjoy your weekends.

The summer break ended with Vettel powering through a steering problem that threw his rack out of ratio on left hand turns, to take the checkered flag ahead of Raikkonen. Hams showed good pace mid-race and passed Bottas to attempt to get ahead of one of the Ferrari's, but the Ferrari's were too strong at the Hungaroring and he ended up giving the 3rd position back as promised on the final turn with a speedy Verstappen in hot pursuit. Verstappen was the lone Red Bull to finish the race, after a 10-sec penalty, due to a much too hot turn entry which led to him putting his right front wheel into the left radiator of Ricciardo's car, emptying it of it's fluids and ending his race on lap one. Alonso was strong all weekend as was McLaren; he finished 6th and enjoyed some sunshine underneath the podium, reenacting his sunbathing on this same track in 2015 after his car broke early in the race, while the champagne was being popped -- his teammate Vandoorne took 10th putting both cars in the points for the first time in ages. Hulkenberg got forced off the track by Magnussen and later retired with possibly-related car issues, Massa was out with an illness which gave Paul Di Resta an opportunity to drive a 2017 F1, but ended up having to retire late due to some car issues and Kimi was pissed on the podium once again being thwarted from a possible race win when he was out pacing Vettel but didn't get team orders to pass; in retrospect their 1-2 finish justified the decision to leave positions as is, but since passing is so hard to do and a 1-stopper was the plan for most of the field, you'd run through your tires if you chased too hard which would ruin your race (with a second pit-stop). With the checkered flag dropped, McLaren has leap frogged Sauber to get into 9th spot and Ferrari closed the gap to Mercedes from 55 to 29. The Driver's Championship standings are as follows: Vettel, Hamilton (-14), Bottas (-33), Ricciardo (-85),  Raikkonen (-86), Verstappen (-135). Spa will bring us back to the power tracks, so we'll see if Mercedes can counter what Ferrari has done in Budapest with the Fiat CEO breathing down Arrivabene's neck all race.

Enjoy your weekends.

The F1 circus has arrived to showcase the fields talent at the Hungaroring, but before the 2nd half of the season begins lets recap the action from Silverstone two weeks back. There was some initial controversy with Lewis not showing up to the first F1 Live event in England, thrown by the new F1 ownership, but the weekend proved out in his favor. Qualifying was a mixed bag of weather conditions, typical of Silverstone, and with rain fading around the middle of Q1 it turned into a balancing act of running inters or slicks which paid off in spades to a final flyer by Alonso that just barely made the time cutoff, vaulting a McLaren to the top of a qualy session for the first time in several years. Things dried out for the remainder of Q2 and Q3 which brought reality to some of the mid-pack teams taking advantage of wet conditions earlier. Much like the previous race for Hams, Bottas had a gear box change which brought with it a 5 grid-spot penalty so he went for an alternate tire strategy, running Softs in Q2. Bottas had a decent qualy, but he wasn't able to edge the Ferrari's in Q3, putting him in 4th. Raikkonen out paced Vettel, Hamilton put together one of the best laps of all time, a 126.600 (2.6 faster than pole in 2016). This mark was over a half second clear of 2nd and vaulted Hams further into the record books -- 67 poles all-time, one shy of Shumi and a 5th Pole at Silverstone to match all-time leader Jim Clark.

Sunday was hectic, with the biggest surprises being served up in the final few laps. Hams skipped off with another great start. Ricciardo started from 19th, Bottas from 9th, both because of penalties tied to car repairs; Ricciardo had a turbo failure during qualifying. Palmer had DNF'd on the warm up lap, leaving Renault with one car, that of Hulkenburg. The Torro Rosso's came together in Becketts, leaving Sainz DNF'd and Kvyat blaming Sainz for the incident. Thnakfully for Force India, Ocon and Perez stayed clear of one another, despite running together just about the entire afternoon. Their effort resulted in double points, finishing 8th and 9th, respectively. Massa took the final point in 10th, Stroll was in the teens along with the Haas and Sauber duos. Alonso lost another power unit and DNF'd mid-race after a better than average qualy. Speaking of DNF's, Verstappen finally finished a race and he ended up finishing 4th. He pitted really late for new tires and that's where most of the late race craziness came into play. With two laps left Raikkonnen's left front delaminated and tire carcass flopped around while he still had air in the tire, so he limped it back to the pit and got a set of supersofts. He was pissed because of his continued bad luck, which has typically resulted in him finishing behind Vettel and it looked like the same thing was going to happen. He gets fresh tires and comes out of the pit behind Vettel on the last lap (51/51) and next thing you know Vettel is veering off track with a flat front left soft. Sparks a blazing, Vettel has to limp his way around to the pit while Hams takes the last turn to his 4th consecutive win at Silverstone, much to the crowds delight. Meanwhile, Bottas had worked his way up behind Vettel and was looking to pass him, on his supersofts, but the puncture made life much easier for him. With Raikkonen pitting late as well Valteri brought a much needed 1-2 to Mercedes AMG Petronas Racing. With Vettels' late pit, Verstappen worked his way into 4th, Ricciardo's strong drive through the field topped off at 5th, Hulkenburg took 6th and Vettel was far enough ahead to maintain 7th position. The implications here are tremendous, both with Driver's and Manufacturer's Chips, Hamilton now 1 point behind Vettel going into the 2nd half of the season.

With the checkered flag dropped, the Drivers Championship standings are as follows: Vettel, Hamilton (-1), Bottas (-23), Ricciardo (-60), Raikkonen (-79), Verstappen (-120). Mercedes is now 55pts ahead of Ferrari in the Constructors'. Hungary is a technical track so expect to see the lower powered competitors, like Red Bull and Renault look just about as strong. It should be another exciting weekend to see how the multiple storylines of the field shake out.

Enjoy your weekends.
