Monza was another crazy race with championship implications. Hams had a bad start and finish in the sprint race, putting him a bit out of position in the race and while trying to pass Max early, they touch tires and he looses a spot or two. Fast forward to the first round of pit stops, Max has a stinker (10sec) and homes out no longer in the effective lead. He goes nuts on his out-lap to ensure Hamilton doesn't get the undercut on his stop, but Hams comes out of the pit a bit ahead of Max. They both came to turn one at about the same time and more wheel on wheel crime took place. This time around, however, they tangle rear tires. Verstappen was dinged by the stewards for this accident, which ended with a rear tire on Hamiltons helmet in a very worrisome scene resulting in a red flag. Verstappen got a 5-grid spot penalty primarily because Hamilton was there first and neither yielded coming out of the chicane -- not surprising based on what they're fighting for. Even though these two took each other out of the race, the race leader at the time was neither of them. Ricciardo, after all these ups and downs in the McLaren found his groove on a track that suited the McLaren better than the front runners had anticipated. Daniel looked comfortable and it showed during the sprint and during the actual race. Norris was in position to pickup where Max and Lewis left off, getting behind his teammate as the challenges chased after them. The points grab commenced and the newly announced 2022 Alfa Romeo driver Valtteri Bottas worked his way through the field after his grid penalty to take the final podium spot. Ferrari raced well, taking 4th and 6th, Perez snagged 5th to help with damage control in the Constructors' and Alpine took 8th and 10th. George Russell piloted his Williams to 9th for even more points this year and Lance got his Aston into 7th. Congrats to McLaren and Daniel for the race win and having all the hard work and rough years finally pay off. I'm sure this won't be the last time they content for a race win this season. Russia, this weekend, should be another interesting race; Red Bull typically isn't super strong in Sochi, but they'll be doing all they can to gain points in the Drivers' and Constructors' chips. This Driver's Championship is as competitive as it's been is years and I'm enjoying, although I'd like them both to finish the races.

Enjoy your motorsport weekends.

Short week again, rolling into the final race of a F1 triple header, post-summer break. The Sprint Qualifying rules are back again for Monza, but before that, lets review Max's homecoming in Zandvoort. Max was everything we thought he'd be, over the weekend, in front of his home fans with all the pressure of trying to take the lead in the Driver's Championship back after a run of bad luck. Hamilton showed poise getting within a few hundredths of Max's pole time in Q3, but Max and the Red Bull was the superior package last weekend -- with a commendation going to the ability of the Ferrari to change direction very well and outperform their nearest rivals in papaya for another weekend. Gasly in his Alfa Tauri raced outstanding as well, finishing fourth in a generally quiet race with no one near him. Perez has more trouble on Saturday which lead to him racing from the backpack to points, but his Sunday skill was on display, finishing in 8th on a track where passing is no easy feat. Alonso had another solid race, taking 6th late in the race over his countryman, Sainz, with his tires going off. Bottas continued to play the team game despite what he wanted to do, get the fastest lap after a late stop by the team to cover off potential tire failure. He took 3rd, right behind Hams which has been typical of recent memory. Valtteri announced, post-race, that he'd be going to Alfa Romeo, replacing his countryman, Kimi, with a multi-year deal starting with the 2022 regulation change over. So this would point to George Russell making the leap to Merc, however, all should be revealed shortly (probably as I type). With the checkered flag dropped Max is in the lead of the Driver's, Mercedes remains in the lead of the Constructors and everyone looks forward to the power-friendly circuit of Monza. The scene of Zandvoort was incredible, the track design was old school, wildly banked, narrow and quick; most everyone enjoyed the track and I too look forward to the next race in Holland.
Enjoy your motorsport weekends.

We all saw it so there isn't much to discuss; in some cases we saw it over the course of 12hrs if you were following on DVR and had your live race recording cutoff, waiting for the delayed airing Sunday night. 4 laps behind the safety car, half points for the top ten. This Verstappen homecoming weekend in the Netherlands should be better, weather permitting. The major takeaways from this past weekend at Spa were that George Russell is pretty incredible, taking second in the rain in his Williams; Max and the RBR still have the all-around pace edge even after a tricky weekend. Also, a shame for all the binned and damaged cars over the entire weekend. There were quite a few shunts, ranging from slow to dangerously quick. Looking forward, F1 hasn't been at Zandvoort in years so this should be interesting. Above all else though, please let us get some reasonable weather so we can get some F1 racing action.

Enjoy your motorsport holiday weekends.

Hungary was a wilder ride than even Silverstone; and once again Red Bull got the short end of the stick. A surprise result for Alpine as their car was incredible and Ocon took his first race win with the help of the wiley Alonso holding up Hamilton's run through the field after the Merc blunder of not switching off wets when the entire field did, following the red flag Valtteri's bowling ball impression caused. I say blunder due to the result, but at the time they were at the front of the field and had no idea what anyone else was doing. So they primarily lost a game of chicken. Back to that bowling ball impression though; plenty of DNFs resulted from that crash, McLaren and RedBull getting the worst of it -- Max continued his race but his barge boards were so destroyed they couldn't be repaired so he raced with jacked up aero all race, but was miraculously able to finish tenth. Another beneficiary of the rain was Vettel, but....as you'll see below his second place finish wasn't meant to be, due to some other issues his car had which lead to him getting DQ'd after the race. That DQ was quite a big deal, because plenty of folks downstream gained points accordingly. William's scored with both cars, but got even more points with the bump. Max got another point, moving from 10th to 9th. Sainz got bumped up to the podium and Alonso got bumped to 4th to bring in the biggest haul for Alpine ever in a single race. And of course Hams moved from 3rd to 2nd, after falling to the very back of the field. Vettel lost out due to the inability to turn over 1L of fuel after the race. Aston Martin put up a fight during the Summer break (video below) but at this time they have no recourse. Everything that's happened has lead to a few things; one, Ferrari has closed the gap to McLaren in the Constructors and has another engine upgrade on the way. Merc has taken the lead over in both Drivers and Constructors Championships. Ricciardo still hasn't gotten a handle on the McLaren and Alonso is as good as he's ever been. Spa is a legendary track where drafting and power are keys to success. It'll be interesting to see how RBR responds and how Valtteri continues working on his bid to keep the Merc seat in 2022.
Enjoy your motorsport weekends.

Top Gear UK Season 23 ends and Chris Evans leaves the show, capping off the swirling rumors of his need for control and Matt LeBlanc not wanting to work with him. After watching the new season and seeing Chris Harris kill it with his short films, I remembered that he could do a show on his own filled with sweet car reviews and wished he would return to the interwebs. Then I saw an advert for Chris Harris On Cars the TV show airing next Monday @ 9pm on BBC America. Glad he's back to giving the people what they want. Back to Top Gear UK, though, it was rough to start, but episode 6 was decent, despite it being a collection of solo-acts until the final presenters showdown. Word is they'll be looking for a more subtle and witty lead Brit for season 24, to bring the ratings back up, but it will take seasons to build the fans back up again. Top Gear was it's presenters, not the production, but I hope it turns around as the world needs more car shows. That said, I'm looking forward to The Grand Tour.

We have F1 races, back to back, twice this month (!) so we're back at em' after that nutty ending in Austria that left the locals booing Hams on the top step for really no reason other than loving their neighbor-ish countryman, German driver Rosberg, despite him going out of his way to wreck Hams rather then be passed on the last lap. Rosberg is officially holding onto his Championship hopes with his fingernails and he'll be passed before long if this is his only tactic. If Toto and Nikki want to enforce team rules because Rosberg likes aggressively defending Hamilton's advances, with less than desirable results, then this will eventually turn into Hamilton getting the team order nod(s) when he more than likely takes over the Driver's Championship points lead in another few weeks. We'll see how this plays out this weekend at Silverstone. To recap; rain made qualifying more than interesting, controversial curbing updates and four cars with broken rear suspension prior to the race. Jenson Button starts 3rd for the first time since 2014 (qualy'd 5th), then finished 6th. Both Toro Rosso's DNF'd, Force India is still fast and Hulkenberg qualified 3rd. Ferrari is still fast, but a tire strategy gamble the team put Vettel on lead to a spectacular shredded right-rear supersoft, ping-pong, DNF. Vettel, much like the last time this happened (@ Spa last Summer), Pirelli was thrown under the bus. Perez had a brake failure on the last lap of the race that put him in the wall, for a gutting DNF, but this lead to Wehrlein getting a single point for Manor; he also put the Manor into Q2 with a strong outing and was generally quick all weekend. Speaking of benefiting off the error of others, Rosberg's destruction of his front wing lead to Verstappen snagging 2nd and Raikkonen 3rd, rounding out the podium. Kimi is supposedly racing for his job (sound familiar?), so he held the Ferrari torch for the weekend; and coincidentally he's now tied with Vettel in the Driver's Championship. Verstappen went on a one stop strategy to leap frog his teammate and used his old softs to hold off Kimi through the checkered flag. Alonso DNF'd due to mechanical failure late, again. Haas is still scoring points and the team now has 28, just behind McLaren Mercedes. With the smoke clear the Driver's Championship standing are as follows: Rosberg, Hamilton (-11), Vettel (-57), Raikkonen (-57), Ricciardo (-65), Verstappen (-81). This weekend in England should be another entertaining race.

Enjoy your weekends.

Great weekend ahead with the 84th running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans race through Circuit de Sarthe. We have all of the usual suspects along side Ford Racing and the all new Ford GT LM car, which I've been wanting to get a better look at all year. Porsche is coming off a strong 1-2 finish in 2015 and Audi wasn't to reclaim the throne. Toyota ran into some reliability issues late and they to want another good showing. Nissan is waiting in the wings too, with the GTR-LM. LMP1 has got story lines out the wazoo. Fox has expanded their coverage over last year, but FS2 is still barely available in the mid-atlantic. Thankfully the FS1 coverage is solid on the start and finish side of things.

We also have another F1 race, coming right off the Canadian Grand Prix at Gilles Villeneuve Circuit. Last week Ham took a second win in a row after taking pole, but the race start wasn't ideal. The wall of champions sucked a few more cars in over the weekend. Sainz makes up for hitting the wall with a good showing on race day. Verstappen is back to form, making Nico look desperate. Vettel (2nd) is looking strong yet again, while the Mercedes boys may need to revisit the clutch mechanism for starts. Watch out for those seagulls, man. Bottas hit the podium in 3rd for the first time in a while; the Williams benefiting from its suitability to the power track of Canada. With the checkered flag dropped the Driver's standings are as follows: Rosberg, Hamilton (-9), Vettel (-38), Ricciardo (-44), Raikkonen (-47), Verstappen (-66).

This time we'll be in controversial Azerbaijan, where protests have taken place regarding existing human rights issues. Reminiscent of Bahrain 2014, this is nothing new to F1 as Bernie is in the money making business. The story lines for F1 abound as Nico's once strong start is beginning to level out with the remaining field coming to form. While this circuit hasn't been run before the typical street track is hard to pass and rough when it comes to lack of runoff and barriers. However the initial look seems like it'll be much more friendly than say a Monaco; it should be interesting to see who adapts to this boxy new street track first. And with every new circuit is an opportunity to be the first to claim victory. It should be another great one.

Enjoy your weekends.

When we last left off, the Monaco Grand Prix blessed our television sets, with some surprises all around. Ricciardo's Red Bull took pole, but finished 2nd in the race due to a pit-stop that the whole team would like to forget. Verstappen, while a proven talent, still hasn't tamed this famed street track and crashed in just about every phase of the weekend, most notably the race. Alonso's McLaren finished 5th. Hams finally took a win. Sergio Perez took 3rd and was probably the happiest man on the podium, and with Hams there for the first time since clenching the 2015 Drivers Championship, that was hard to do. The purple banded ultrasoft tire was available all weekend, but the race started off wet after great weather leading up. Rosberg had brake issues and really the first spot of unreliability so far this season, much to the delight of the other teams and drivers. And as expected, Monaco's ARMCO barriers remain undefeated. With the smoke clear the Driver's Championship standings are as follows: Rosberg, Hamilton (-24), Ricciardo (-40), Raikkonen (-45), Vettel (-46), Verstappen (-68).

Enjoy your weekends.
