Short week so I'll keep it brief. The biggest takeaways from the second race at Silverstone was Max Verstappen was right, the Merc doesn't like high temps and rear tires with the upped pressures enforced by FIA to avoid tire blow outs, and fortune favors the bold. Some nice one stoppers out there for points, Hulk's Racing Point fires up on race day and he scores points in 7th, while Perez recovers from covid. The strategy didn't pay off for Bottas, but it seemed more like trying to mix things up turned out to work better for Hams after thinking Bottas covered off Max; the Red Bull's pace was just too strong in the heat for the Merc. Max earned that win, Hamilton did well to take second with fresh tires late, but took a little to long to pass Leclerc during his second stint. Bottas, dropped two spots from pole and will have a bad taste in his mouth heading to Spain. Merc is going to have to figure out why they can't handle the heat; it could be too much downforce based on discussions from post-race, but we'll see how the long run tire performance looks for the teams comes FP2. Everyone is heading to Spain in August so it should be another hot one. With the checkered flag dropped, the Driver's Championship standings are as follows: Hamilton, Verstappen (-30), Bottas (-34), Leclerc (-62), Norris (-69), Albon (-71). As you can see, Bottas' 11th place finish in the BGP has cost him quite a bit and he has good reason to be peeved, but there's a lot of bad luck in play which he can hopefully shake going forward.

It's been a short week so here's a quicky. The French GP was kind of predictable. Hams took another win after taking pole, he just missed the fastest lap because Vettel was in no mans land in 5th and put on softs with two laps left. Verstappen had another strong drive, Gasly did pretty well in his home grand prix. Ricciardo got a little spicy out there with overtakes, got dinged for one of them but still finished in the top ten. Leclerc raced a strong race and almost nipped Bottas at the end for second place as Valteri was managing an issue. Norris had a great drive, even after a hydraulic problem almost ruined his entire race, but he still took points home. His teammate Sainz stayed ahead of him the entire race despite Norris being legitimately held up for a period of time (tire management and all). So another Merc 1-2 in the books, the French fans gave Leclerc a hearty applause and Ferrari is still scratching their heads on pace as they apparently figured a few things out with their front wing upgrade. Haas looked no better than Williams in France, they have work to do -- Grosjean had to retire in his home GP. We're back in Austria, which is a technical track that rewards aero, but still requires power; hopefully Ferrari can bring something to the table and Red Bull can finally bring a result in a home race. Merc is concerned with some reliability concerns with their latest powerplant revision, there may be a chance for someone to get within striking distance of breaking their GP win streak this season.

Mexico was full of optimism, dejection, failure, tire graining, success and gratitude. Ricciardo took pole over Verstappen by a few hundredths, but in the race his car gave up on him with about 15 laps to go, smoke out the back. How Verstappen has all the Renault power-unit reliability luck on his side is unknown, but he does. 8 DNFs for Ricciardo this year and there are two races to go. The only driver with worse luck is Alonso, who DNF'd for another race, on his farewell tour, after some debris flying off Ocon's car during mid-field action on lap one lead to damage that eventually forced retirement. Mercedes seems to be reeling in the last two races, tire management falling off quite harshly which has put them at disadvantage behind Ferrari and Red Bull. Ferrari and Merc were looking at Red Bull rear wings as Mexico's altitude makes it more aero-focused than power-focused, bringing Verstappen victory for a second year in a row. Raikkonen had another solid outing, taking third on the podium after Bottas' tires fell off a cliff late in the race when a one stop didn't seem to be possible for the Silver Arrows. Perez, fighting for a solid one stop points finish DNF'd after his car let go heading into the last 1/3rd of the race, disappointingly in front of his home crowd. Vettel, finished second after a great drive following a less than ideal Q3, close to keeping the Driver's Championship delayed for another race -- but in the end he was a class act and congratulated Hams on the accomplishment. Brazil is another technical track that does reward power so we'll see if Merc tightens things up with upgrades or if Ferrari and Red Bull continue shine late. Three way manufacturer battles definitely make things more interesting; 2019 should be a great year for racing fans if the Honda power unit proves as effective as Helmut Marco believes it will be.

The past few races have been pretty crazy. China once again shows strategy is enough to bridge the gap between the top three teams. Don't have enough power on the straights? Overtake via pitstop, ideally as soon as a safety car shows up and get on the best tires for the remainder of the race. China was an unbelievable victory for Red Bull and Daniel Ricciardo, great race for Bottas and solid grid spot penalty salvage for Hamilton. Kimi is still just off the tip of the Ferrari spear, still getting out qualy'd, by hundredths, by Vettel. Vettel still seems to be a magnet for agressive driver moves, but he still did his best to finish an avoid giving up major points to Hams in the Driver's championship. Verstappen, despite his incident with Vettel and 10 second penalty, drove his ass off and helped Red Bull take home great team points. And in case you didn't noticed, Massa's replacement isn't doing so well; Williams has regressed.
Just when I was warming up to Sky Sports shared coverage of F1 on ESPN, they don't include a live airing of qualifying in Azerbaijan this weekend (or so I can tell right now) -- what a !@#$*(# joke. This weekend should still be an interesting race as we wait to see if Red Bull can build on this success, if Petronas Mercedes can come up with a tweak to help them get on the front row, if Ferrari is still the team to beat this year (despite not leading the Manufacturers Championship) and if Alonso can continue knocking on the door of the top 7 teams.
