Orbital Dreams: BMW X5M and One Lap of America 2012 (Drive Clean)

When I say it's been months since I've washed either of my cars, I mean it. I just spent another weekend cleaning and wrenching around my house. It's sad I've yet to step a foot into the garage this summer to play with my most recent set of wheels (that have been sitting for over a year) or my new wash bucket with the dirt grate, but that's life sometimes. It's also been quite a few months since a car-detailing post, so why not start today. This flick stars Drive network's Matt Farah, and Larry from AmmoNYC, documenting them as they participate in the 2012 One Lap of America. Matt is running a BMW X5M on the trip, so they decide to use some car care products on it to compare what happens with protection, and without, over ~4000 miles of highway and track driving. I've never used wheel protectant before, but I have a feeling I will be going forward. Don't forget to watch til the end.

This weekend more than covers for last weekends' lack of variety. We have F1, Mecum auctions, ALMS and more of the regulars. The big thing to remember for this weekend is that Alonzo leads the driver's championship, becoming the first driver to win twice earlier this season at his home course. The second driver to win two races, Webber, is in second place. He's well known as an excellent F1 pilot and the red-headed step child of Red Bull Renault, currently driving as good as he ever has in working towards another title run. In other news, Button can't buy a break. Hams is still hanging around, but hasn't helped his cause much over the last couple weeks. Vettel is still in a good position given the goose egg he got two races ago. Schuey is competing in races much better than expected this year, despite his misfortune, and will be going home for this weekends race. This should be good one...just tell Maldonado to stop ruining other peoples races by bad judgement in the twisties. Enjoy your weekends.

Quick Vid: 788hp Volvo Amazon Kombi-69

The first time I saw this thing was on the web in the mid-2000s. There were some high-quality desktop wallpapers of this thing at a Swedish gas station that I had on my computer for several months. All I could think was what a fine timepiece of a showcar this 67' Volvo Amazon Kombi-69 was. Well there's some video of it running around and I figured it'd be great post material. Word has it this Swedish built toy is putting down just under 800 hp from its 2.8 Liter turbo-charged inline-six. The creator of this beast is one Mattias Vöcks; he's a Koenigsegg engineer that likes to tinker a bit in his off-time. His Volvo project was making 600hp back when it first made its rounds around the web, but now it's simply out for blood. The craftmanship and brutal usability of this car makes it a playground legend among car guys. Bravo, Mattias.
